Django or FastAPI: which Python developer should your startup hire first?

Most early stage teams that pick Python for their backend end up asking the same question within a few months: do we hire a Django developer or a FastAPI developer? The answer matters more than it looks, because the two frameworks attract slightly different engineers and reward different habits.

What Django developers are usually good at

Django has been around since 2005 and comes with batteries included: an ORM, migrations, an admin panel, auth and a mature plugin ecosystem. Developers who have spent years in Django tend to be strong at:

If your product is a classic SaaS app with users, teams, billing and a dashboard, a senior Django developer can get you to a working v1 very quickly.

What FastAPI developers are usually good at

FastAPI is younger and lighter. It is built around type hints, Pydantic models and async request handling. Engineers who choose it usually bring:

If your product is API first, talks to a lot of third party services, or wraps machine learning models, FastAPI experience is often the better fit.

A simple way to decide

Ask three questions before you write the job post:

  1. Is most of the work CRUD over a relational database? Lean Django.
  2. Is most of the work calling other services or serving models? Lean FastAPI.
  3. Will a non technical teammate need an admin screen in month one? Django wins on that alone.

In practice a good senior Python engineer can move between the two within a couple of weeks. What you should screen for is not the framework name on the CV but the habits underneath: can they find an N+1 query, explain when async does not help, and write tests that cover the boring edge cases.

Interview tasks that work for both

Give candidates a small existing repo instead of a blank screen. A 300 line app with one slow endpoint, one mutable default argument and one blocking call inside an async route tells you more in 40 minutes than any algorithm puzzle. Watch how they read code they did not write, because that is most of the job.

If you need someone this month

Screening properly takes time, and most founders do not have it. Our team at Witarist keeps a bench of Python engineers who have already been through this kind of debugging round, across Django, FastAPI, Flask and data engineering stacks. You can browse pre-vetted Python developers here and get a shortlist in about 48 hours.

Whichever route you take, decide the framework question first. It saves you from hiring a great engineer for the wrong half of the job.
